We screen the new born for disorders or for conditions which, if treated in time, can prevent life-long physical disabilities, mental retardation, or even death. Quite often these disorders are not noticeable in the newborn but if the screening does reveal an inherited metabolic disorder then treatment can be started. A few drops of blood from the newborn baby's heel are collected on a special filter paper, which is allowed to dry and then sent to the laboratory for testing. The screening is done for five disorders.
