Fernandez Hospital has been successfully conducting Basic Surgical Skills Workshops for the last 10 years. This year we had 37 delegates from 12 different medical colleges. The faculty included Dr. Y. Padmaja Y., Dr. Vinatha Puli and Dr. A. Surekha.
It is a very practical hands-on workshop not only for postgraduate students but also for all working in the surgical department. Delegates were given a brief overview about the history of surgery and suture material followed by several audio/video presentations about hand washing, sterilization, autoclaving and suturing techniques and knot tying. The practical sessions were supervised by consultants in small groups of five.
Our aim is to continue to conduct this high quality workshop each year and ensure that every surgeon is well trained. This year too, we received a very positive feedback from the 37 participants: 1. This has helped correct my many mini mistakes. Thanks for enhancing my knowledge with good description; 2. Learnt many new things ... the workshop is totally worth it; 3. We have benefitted from the workshop! 4. Very useful ... waiting for more workshops; 5. Workshop for TAH and VH; 6. Please allot more time for sutures and knots.
