We've got you, Mama!

Did you know that breastmilk is nature's perfect food for your baby?
It is safe, clean, and packed with antibodies that strengthen you and your baby and fight against common childhood illnesses. Breastmilk is rich in lactoferrin, oligosaccharides, and long-chain fatty acids, which support your infant’s brain development and strengthen immunity. Studies show that breastfed babies perform better on intelligence tests and are less prone to obesity and diabetes in later life. These are just some of the many benefits of breastfeeding. Yet, globally, fewer than half of infants under six months old are exclusively breastfed, largely due to a lack of sustained support.

This World Breastfeeding Week, let’s commit to “Prioritising Breastfeeding and Creating Sustainable Support Systems.” With the right systems in place, every mother can give her baby the healthiest start.

Here's what you can learn this breastfeeding week as a New Mom:

  • Start Early: Begin your breastfeeding journey within 1 hour of birth to protect your baby from newborn infections and mortality (risk of death in later life).
  • Breastfeed Exclusively: Breastfeeding exclusively for the first 6 months benefits both the mother and baby - risk of ovarian and breast cancer.
  • Complement, Don’t Replace: At 6 months introduce solid food while continuing to breastfeed up to 2 years or more.
  • Feed on Demand: Nurse your baby whenever it shows signs of hunger, whether during the day or at night! There is no specific schedule; your baby will know best.
  • Share the Load: Breastfeeding is easier when partners share the load. Therefore, being there for your spouse matters.
  • Workplace Support is Key: Breastfeeding moms need understanding, flexibility and strong maternity policies at work to continue nursing with confidence.
