Ovarian Dermoid Cysts: How Surgery Preserved the Fertility of a Young Girl

In recent times, the detection of ovarian cysts in women has become very prevalent. This may be due to lifestyle factors, improved scanning equipment or diagnostic tools, as well as environmental or genetic influences.

What are Dermoid Cysts?

Dermoid cysts are a type of cyst that is prone to twisting and requires emergency surgery. These cysts form from embryonic cells, which is why they may contain tissues like hair, fat, or even teeth. Although they often appear in the ovaries, they can grow in other parts of the body as well.

Dermoid cysts can also grow back after removal. While harmless and usually slow growing, they can cause pain or infection. In rare cases, they may lead to ovarian torsion and even rupture.

Case Study: A Unique Surgical Experience

While cysts are commonly identified and treated at Fernandez Hospital, we came across an interesting case in August. A young girl in her early 20s approached us with scans reporting large ovarian cysts on both ovaries. For a better understanding of the situation, we conducted tests to confirm the presence of the dermoid cysts.

Once confirmed, our expert team determined that laparoscopic intervention was the best course of action, given her young age and certain aesthetic concerns. Laparoscopic surgeries allow women to go back to their daily routines much faster when compared to traditional surgery.

The surgery proceeded with meticulous steps and without disturbing any healthy ovarian tissue present. A total of 5 cysts were removed from the right ovary and three from the left, each cyst measured close to the size of a melon: 10 cm and 8 cm on each side. Upon inspection of the cysts, it was noted that the cysts contained hair, teeth, fat and other liquid material.

The laparoscopic surgery helped remove the cysts safely, cosmetically and helped retain fertility.
