Outpatient Hysteroscopy: Precision Care Without Hospital Stay
At Fernandez, we understand how stressful heavy periods, fibroids, unexplained bleeding, or fertility concerns can be. Our Outpatient Hysteroscopy Clinic offers a faster, gentler way to diagnose and treat these issues, all in a single visit and without the need for hospital admission or general anaesthesia.
An outpatient hysteroscopy is a simple, minimally invasive procedure in which a thin, flexible telescope called a hysteroscope is used to view the inside of the uterus. This allows our specialists to identify problems such as fibroids, polyps, a thickened uterine lining, misplaced IUDs, or causes of abnormal or post-menopausal bleeding with greater accuracy. It is also an important tool when evaluating fertility challenges or recurrent miscarriage. By performing the procedure in an outpatient setting, we reduce both time and discomfort for women while ensuring they receive immediate answers and, when necessary, treatment during the same visit. 5.jpg336.1 KB
At Fernandez, the procedure is performed by experienced gynaecologists using ultra-thin hysteroscopes that minimise discomfort. Before the appointment, we may recommend taking a mild painkiller to ease cramping. During the hysteroscopy, a speculum is gently inserted (like a Pap smear) before the hysteroscope is passed through the cervix into the uterus. A small amount of sterile fluid opens the space inside the uterus, allowing the doctor to clearly view the lining on a screen and carry out minor treatments, such as removing a polyp or retrieving an IUD, if required. The entire process usually takes just five to ten minutes, after which most women can return to their daily routine.
Some cramping or light spotting is common afterwards, especially if a biopsy is taken. While most women tolerate the procedure well, you can ask for it to be stopped at any time if it becomes uncomfortable. As with any medical procedure, risks such as pain, bleeding, infection, or, very rarely, injury to the uterus are possible, but they remain uncommon. In instances where the procedure cannot be completed in the clinic, your doctor will recommend the safest alternative, which may involve performing it under anaesthesia in the operating theatre. 3.jpg303.26 KB
