Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day: Honouring Little Lives

Every year on 15 October, we pause to remember the babies who are no longer with us. Some were carried only briefly; some arrived and left sooner than anyone hoped. Each life matters, and each loss changes a family.

Losing a baby at any stage is painful, confusing and often very lonely. If this is something you’ve lived through, you don’t have to go through it on your own.

Understanding Infant Loss

Infant loss can happen for many reasons, and too often those reasons are beyond anyone’s control. It may include:
 • Miscarriage or stillbirth
 • Neonatal death
 • Loss related to health complications for the mother or baby

Every story is different. Still, the grief that follows is real and it deserves to be recognised, spoken about and treated with care.

Coping with Grief

There’s no right way to grieve and no fixed timetable. People find comfort in different things, and that’s okay. A few ways that often help are:
 • Talking to someone you trust: A partner, friend, family member or counsellor. Saying the baby’s name can feel important.
Finding others who understand: A support group, online community or remembrance circle.
Making a small ritual to remember your baby: A memory box, photographs, a planted tree or a quiet place to return to.

Be gentle with yourself. Small steps count. It’s fine to ask for practical help when you need it.

The Fernandez Butterfly Initiative!

At Fernandez, we strive to respond to loss with sensitivity and respect. The Butterfly Initiative is our way of offering quiet, meaningful support to families during this time:
Butterfly Symbol: A small magnet outside a room that signals to staff a family is grieving and needs extra care.
Trained Staff: Team members learn how to listen, offer space, and respond with empathy rather than rushing.
A Safe Environment: We work to provide privacy, comfort and emotional support when families need it most.

These measures are meant to make small but significant differences in how families experience care.
